A Message for Pentecost!April 27, 2009
Friends of Emmaus and Chrysalis,
For Christians there are four major holidays:
Christmas—We celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ,
Good Friday and Easter—We celebrate Christ’s death and Resurrection,
Ascension—We celebrate Christ’s return to heaven above
and PENTECOST–We celebrate the Birthday of the Church.
Pentecost says that the early Christians discovered joy unspeakable in the church of our Lord Jesus Christ. Again and again Paul writes “Rejoice in the Lord. Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice”
Today let me share with you three things I have learned from Pentecost.
- THE CHURCH WAS CREATED BY GOD “When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” The Holy Spirit came 50 days after the resurrection. God created the church. God brought the church into being. The church may never be the most popular institution in the world because the church goes counter to popular culture. You see God wants the church to stand for truth, to be unshakable in our presentation of the Gospel as Miss California did in her answer to a question in the Miss Universe pageant.
- THE PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH IS TO COMMUNICATE THE LOVE OF GOD TO A LOST AND DYING WORLD. The theme of Pentecost is communication. The purpose of the church is to communicate the love of Jesus to a lost and dying world. Pray for friends who need the walk to Emmaus to feel the Love of Christ Jesus.
- THE GOAL OF THE CHURCH IS TO ESTABLISH A FELLOWSHIP Can’t you see the early Christians when they hear the good about Jesus? On the day of Pentecost, there were 3000 new converts and they suddenly share the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. All of them knew that they were guilty, that they had crucified Christ with their sins. But now they have repented of their sins. They’ve been baptized. They’ve been redeemed of their sins and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Christ offers salvation to all people. God works all kinds of miracles to spread the gospel, using many languages as He calls all kinds of people to become His followers.
There are many people who need Jesus: people who are lonely, tired who need to hear about the love of Jesus. They need to know they can come just as they are.
Why not invite them to the Fall Men’s or Women’s Walk where they can experience Christ’s love and fellowship of the Holy Spirit.
